A rewire replaces the old cabling throughout a property. It's the biggest electrical job in a home, so it starts with a survey.

Many older homes only need a partial rewire of the original circuits. The survey shows which you need, and that can make a big difference to the cost.

Do you need this?

Signs to look out for

Cloth or rubber covered cable

Rubber insulation cracks as it ages, and cloth covered cable is well past its working life. Either one means a rewire is due.

Round pin sockets, or very few sockets

Round pin sockets usually date from before the 1950s. One socket per bedroom means the house was wired for far less than you use today.

Lights dimming when appliances start

If the lights dim when the kettle or shower comes on, the wiring may be struggling with the load.

Wiring over 25 years old

It's worth having it inspected. The inspection will show whether a rewire is needed.

How long it takes and what's involved

A full house rewire usually takes 5 to 10 working days, depending on the size of the property. A flat takes 3 to 5. Larger homes take longer. I'll agree a realistic timescale with you before work starts.

Rewiring means lifting floorboards and cutting channels in walls. I fill the channels afterwards ready for decorating, so it's best to decorate after the rewire. If you're having building work done, that's the ideal time to rewire.
