The questions I get asked most

What is an EICR and when is one needed?

An EICR (Electrical Installation Condition Report) is a safety check of the wiring in a property. Landlords must have one every 5 years. Homeowners should get one when buying a house, after major building work, or every 10 years.

Why does a fuseboard keep tripping?

It usually means there's a fault on one of the circuits. Common causes are a faulty appliance, an overloaded socket or water getting into an outside socket. Unplug the appliances on that circuit and try again. If it still trips, call an electrician.

How long does a typical house rewire take?

Usually 5 to 10 working days for a house, and 3 to 5 for a flat. Larger homes take longer. I'll agree a realistic timescale with you before I start.

What are the signs a fuseboard needs replacing?

Rewireable fuses instead of switches, a wooden or fabric covered board, frequent tripping, scorch marks, or a board over 25 years old. Any of these means it's worth having it checked.

How long does an EV charging point installation take?

Usually 3 to 4 hours. That covers the survey, fitting the charger, testing and the certificate. It can take longer if the cable run is long or the fuseboard needs upgrading.

What is the 18th Edition of the wiring regulations?

The 18th Edition (BS 7671) is the current set of UK wiring regulations. All new electrical work has to meet it. Older installations are still legal, but may need updating during building work or for a landlord's safety check.
