A home charger lets you charge overnight on your driveway for far less than public rapid chargers cost. Fitting it is usually simple. The survey is the important part.

Do you need this?

Signs to look out for

You have a driveway or garage

You'll need a driveway, garage or your own parking bay. The charging cable has to stay on your own property.

Tethered or untethered?

A tethered charger has the cable fixed on, which is handy day to day. An untethered one takes your own cable, which suits you if you change car. Both are equally easy to fit.

Your fuseboard is already full

The job can still go ahead, but you may need a board upgrade or an extra enclosure. The survey will show this before the day.

How long it takes and what affects the price

A standard installation takes 3 to 4 hours. That covers the survey, fitting the charger, testing and the certificate.

The main things that add to the price are a long cable run and a full fuseboard. On larger properties, such as many in Esher and Leatherhead, the length of the cable run makes the biggest difference.
