Fuseboard Installation

Your fuseboard, also called a consumer unit, is where every circuit in your home starts and where its protection sits. If yours still has old rewireable fuses, it's due for an upgrade.

A new board gives each circuit its own RCBO, so a fault on one circuit only switches off that circuit. It comes in a metal case, as the regulations now require.

Do you need this?

Signs to look out for

Old rewireable fuses

If your board has fuses with wire in them instead of switches, it's likely to be decades old and has no RCD protection.

A wooden or fabric covered board

These are among the oldest boards still in use and should be replaced as a priority.

Scorch marks, buzzing or frequent tripping

Any scorching or humming around the board needs checking straight away. Frequent tripping usually points to a fault on a circuit, and I'll check both on the same visit.

A board over 25 years old

A board this old was built to older standards. It's usually worth replacing when other electrical work is being done.

What happens on the day

Most fuseboard changes take a day. The power will be off for much of it, so plan ahead for home working, freezers and any medical equipment.

Before the new board goes in, I test every circuit. Now and then this finds a fault the old board was hiding. If it does, I'll tell you what I've found and what it will cost before I go any further.
